Thanks for pointing me to this! So helpful to think about a glance upward pointing to a move toward cognition, and a glance down as a move inward.

Lovely 🥰 Mr Rodgers, my hero! An Inside Out sequel is in the works, including Anxiety. I write about inner Monkeys of Fear (conditioning) and how they sabotage our best efforts to live from our hearts. You and I are singing a similar song! Thank you 🙏🏽

Here’s a tool from my deck of 5-min practices for sorting emotions: Detangler.

Oh I didn't know there was an Inside Out sequel happening - that's great, I look forward to it. And it sounds like we are interested in similar themes - I'm going to check out your monkeys right now!

Thank you 🙏🏽 PS my dad and his wife are retired chaplains / CPE program creators- so I’m well steeped in ministerial/counseling tea! ☕️ Also SO blessed to have a story mentor, Meg LeFauve, who co-wrote both Inside Out screenplays.

Yes, he’s my dad! I’ll tell him you said that 🥰I posted a photo of us on Valentine’s Day. Do you know of his wife, Susan Lunning?

Oh yes, I know her too! They probably don't know me, but you can tell them I was in the Eastern Region and am working at RWJ in NJ. I can't believe what a small world it is! I hope they are doing well and enjoying retirement!

Thanks for highlighting this! I just wrote about the language of emotions and how important it is to understand and speak the same language in order to develop and maintain relationships. Without the words to describe what we’re feeling can we ever know ourselves and others?

It is so crucial to have that vocabulary, isn't it? Thanks for letting me know about your work, I'm heading over to your page right now to check it out and learn some new things!

Thank you …. I was just talking to my husband about this….. I’m a caregiver for my mom with dementia…. I think a lot about how I can handle my emotions better, understanding why helps my process. I’ve been afraid…. Afraid that I’d do something wrong, make the wrong decision, afraid she would die when I wasn’t there, fear is not the same as sad…..so as her journey progresses my fear is loosing its grip, and now unbearable sadness is here…. ❤️💔

Oh Robin, what a hard journey you are on right now. I can understand why there would be so much fear there, mixed in with the sadness. And you're right, sometimes fear can give us something to do or worry about, so that we don't notice the sadness as much. I will be doing a post in the future about the unique burdens and emotions that caregivers carry, as I believe our society does not do a good job of highlighting how hard it is!

Just the otherday I was a guest on a podcast and we were discussing how caregiving for a parent with dementia is a "long goodbye" with so many mixed emotions. I believe the episdode comes out tomorrow, if you email me at journeyingalongside@substack.com I'll send you a link to it. Or you can look online, it's called "Life, Work and Love" It might help to give voice to some of what you've been going through as the host shares about her experiences as a caregiver to a parent with dementia.

Thank you for this!

One question: Where would "anxious" fit in the Mad Sad Glad Frad paradigm? Everywhere or nowhere ... ?

Great question! Some people might say everywhere! I would inquire more about what the anxiety was about - most often I think it falls into the Frad umbrella, but could be elsewhere depending on what the root cause of the anxiety tends to be.

Hmmm, good points. Thanks!

This is such an enlightening article. These days we keep on discounting on so many things including the way we ourselves feel, forget about recognising the feelings about others.

Thanks a lot for this insightful reminder. 🙏
